Constantly being on the road left musician Danny Stone little time to meet anyone, let alone date, but the moment he heard Kaity Volpe’s voice over the phone, he knew those days were over.
As Danny toured for months playing bass with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, he occasionally told a friend that his life was pretty awesome except for one void: a girlfriend. As any good friend would do, Danny’s buddy put him in touch with his fiancée’s friend at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Danny was instructed to call Kaity on May 12, 2005, to wish her a happy 21st birthday.
“From the very first moment we started talking on the phone, something in her voice made me very comfortable,” says Danny, who earned a jazz studies degree from the University of North Texas in Denton in December 2004. “Unlike a lot of relationships where the first thing is visual, we had a good rapport on the phone.”
Danny finally got to put a face with that voice when he took a break from his travels and headed back to his folks’ Garland home. He and Kaity had their first date in August 2005.
“The first time I saw her, I thought, ‘Man, she’s hot.’ She’s just this amazing person and has this funky sense of humor that I really like,” he says. “I think I had an inkling that it would work out when we were at the Fox & Hound, I wasn’t afraid to beat her at pool.”
Kaity loved that Danny could make her laugh like no one else, and being herself came easily.
“I think it was the right time in both of our lives,” says Kaity, who graduated that December. “We hit these life phases at the same time, whether it’s grad school or moving or career stuff.”
Danny moved to Fort Worth to be near Kaity, and they spent the next year getting closer as Kaity taught tennis and was a personal trainer and Danny taught music and played gigs. They applied to grad schools and planned their future.
As fate would have it, Danny landed at the City College of New York and Kaity at Columbia University. They’ve been living in the Big Apple since August 2007. When it came time to propose, though, Danny knew that only Texas would do.
On New Year’s Eve 2008, Danny took Kaity – along with her younger brother and his fiancée – to his grandparents’ home on Lake Quitman in East Texas. They bicycled all day, shot fireworks over the lake, and then drank champagne as they watched TV’s pre-midnight festivities in Dallas’ Victory Park. Then the countdown began.
“I was turning to clink my glass with his and I see him reach for the mantel,” says Kaity, 26. “I saw the box come out, and I started crying. … I gave him a huge hug.”
It took Danny a minute to get the box open, then he dropped to one knee. They can’t remember Danny’s exact words, but Kaity says his grandfather caught every moment in pictures.
On Sept. 18, Danny and Kaity had a destination wedding in Santa Fe, N.M. Now, with graduate degrees under their belts, Kaity and Danny look to the Dallas area to begin their careers and lives together. Until then, they’ll just enjoy having fun. Together.
“When we’re home, half the time we’re just goofing off or singing crazy, made-up songs,” says Danny, 31.
